Mary Jane Hancock was the sister of famous naturalist and museum founder John Hancock and elected member of the Natural History Society of Northumbria.

She had just as much enthusiasm and zeal for living alongside nature as her brothers, and was known in particular for her love of birds.

She appeared in the Natural History Society of Northumbria Women Naturalists exhibition which celebrates the achievements of pioneering women naturalists
