The representation of adoption in culture can be misguided, often leaning on stereotypes to portray what is a multifaceted, complex and life-changing phenomenon. Jonluke McKie, as an adoptive parent, wanted to draw on his own experience and those of adopted children from ARC Adoption Centre in Sunderland, to create ideas for a play that portrays adoption in an accessible, authentic and exciting way.

Working with Jonluke, director and co-writer Ruth Mary Johnson, as well as lighting designer Si Cole and Designer Amy Watts, I exchanged ideas and facilitated workshops with the children to support the storytelling musically and sonically.

Coming out of the R&D process, we had showcased ‘Up on a Star’ to the children and their families, and had several musical themes including a song (below) featuring the beats, melodies, lyrics and voices of the children.

Am I Dreaming?

  • Rub my eyes

    Am I dreaming

    Peering into

    Strange reflection

    I will try to

    Pinch myself

    I will find out

    Is this real?

    CHORUS

Never thought I would discover,  that I’m not the only one!

    We’re reflections of eachother

    And it’s only just begun!

    The stars brought us together

Now we’re not the only ones!

I felt like I was castaway

    But now I’ve found you

    I found myself!
